The Leadership Shift That Changes Everything
Lead the Person, Not the Problem.
When something goes wrong, most leaders do what comes naturally…they fix the problem.
But the best leaders look deeper. They don’t just ask, “What happened?”
They ask, “What’s behind it?”
Because leadership isn’t about solving faster, it’s about understanding better.
💡 The Mistake: Managing Symptoms
Let’s say a team member misses a deadline.
The surface-level fix? Push them to move faster.
The real issue? Maybe they’re unclear on priorities, overwhelmed, or afraid to ask for help.
If you only address the symptom, the problem always comes back.
🎯 The Shift: Coach, Don’t Correct
Leading the person means taking a coaching mindset.
Instead of jumping in to fix it, slow down and get curious.
Here’s a simple framework I use with clients:
1️⃣ Pause. Don’t react; gather perspective first.
2️⃣ Probe. Ask: “What’s making this hard right now?”
3️⃣ Partner. Collaborate on the next step, not just compliance.
It’s not soft leadership — it’s smart leadership.
Because understanding what drives people creates solutions that actually stick.
⚡ Real Example
One leader I coached kept clashing with an employee who always resisted feedback.
Instead of pushing harder, he started asking questions about what success looked like from their perspective.
That shift turned tension into teamwork and performance improved without a single confrontation.
Sometimes, the best way to lead is to listen your way to clarity.
